Draft Letter to Elected Officials

Here is the draft letter/email that can be sent to your elected officials including MP. MPP/MLA, Councillor/Mayor and School Board Trustee:

Subject: June 23 – National Day of Remembrance for Victims of Terrorism

Dear [Name],

As you may be aware, June 23 marks the National Day of Remembrance for Victims of Terrorism in Canada. On this day 40 years ago, 329 innocent people—including 280 Canadians—were killed in the bombing of Air India Flight 182, the deadliest terrorist attack in Canadian history, carried out by Khalistani extremists.

Leaders from across the country, including the Prime Minister, have issued public statements and participated in memorial services and vigils to honour the victims and reaffirm our collective stand against hatred, extremism, and division.

I was disappointed to note that you have not publicly acknowledged this solemn occasion.

According to recent polling by Angus Reid, 32% of Canadians have never even heard of the Air India bombing, and only 17% are aware that it remains the deadliest act of terrorism Canada has ever endured. This lack of awareness is deeply troubling.

As Ambassador Bob Rae, who was tasked with reviewing the Air India case two decades ago, noted:
“We still have a lot of work to do to make sure it’s taught in schools and people understand this was the worst civil aviation disaster, proportionately every bit as important as 9/11.”

In this context, public recognition and leadership from our elected officials are more important than ever. I urge you to reflect on this omission and take meaningful steps to acknowledge the victims and raise awareness—whether through a public statement, participation in future memorials, or support for educational initiatives.

Thank you for your attention.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]
